Crucially, you can have significant thyroid dysfunction with TSH levels still in the "reference range" – because the range is too broad and doesn't reflect optimal function.
This is the thyroid paradox. The TSH reference range (typically 0.5-4.5 or 0.5-5.5) was set based on the general population, including many people with undiagnosed thyroid issues. Functional medicine practitioners consider TSH above 2.0-2.5 as potentially problematic. Additionally, TSH only measures your pituitary's signal to the thyroid – it doesn't measure actual thyroid hormone levels or how well your cells are using those hormones. You could have "normal" TSH with poor T4-to-T3 conversion, high reverse T3 blocking your receptors, or cellular resistance to thyroid hormone.
Request specific tests by name: Free T3, Free T4, reverse T3, and thyroid antibodies (TPOAb and TgAb). Explain that you have persistent symptoms despite normal TSH and want to investigate further. Key nutrients include zinc, vitamin D, magnesium, and selenium. For testosterone specifically, maintaining healthy body composition, lifting weights, minimizing alcohol, and addressing sleep apnea if present can significantly improve levels. Hormone imbalance in women manifests as irregular periods, PMS, heavy or painful periods, mood swings, anxiety, fatigue, weight gain (especially around midsection), hair loss, acne, low libido, brain fog, and sleep disturbances. Many women are told these symptoms are "normal" or offered birth control pills without investigating the root cause. While 350 ng/dL falls within the "normal" reference range (typically 264-916 ng/dL), this doesn't mean it's optimal for you.
